Temporary Crown Came Off

When your temporary crown comes off, whether it popped loose during lunch or slid off while you were flossing, the exposed tooth is suddenly vulnerable to fracture, sensitivity, and infection.

At Lakefront Family Dentistry in Lake Elsinore, Dr. Derek Hauser and Dr. Mark Phillipe keep one-to-two emergency slots open every weekday so adults, children, and seniors can turn a scary “my crown came off!” moment into a same-day rescue with a custom, permanent CEREC® porcelain crown milled in-house while you relax in our comfortable A-dec chairs.

Learn why a temporary crown can come off, the risks of waiting, the advantages of a one-visit CEREC solution, and the financing and PPO-out-of-network benefits our Patient Coordinators can help you maximize.

Why Temporary Crowns Fall Off

Common chair-side causes

  • Weak provisional cement—designed to loosen easily for the final appointment; a sticky snack can pull it right off
  • Short or over-tapered prep—if too much natural tooth was removed, the provisional has little to “grab”
  • Recurrent decay or leaking restoration weakening the margins
  • Parafunctional habits such as nighttime grinding or ice-chewing that shear temporary material

At-home triggers

  • Caramel, chewing gum, or crunchy baguettes
  • Floss “popping” straight up instead of sliding out sideways
  • Temperature swings from hot coffee to ice water that stresses the cement seal

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

  1. Pain & sensitivityexposed dentin reacts to air and cold drinks.
  2. Risk of fracture — without a protective shell, thin walls can crack; a small emergency can spiral into a root canal.
  3. Tooth drifts in days — adjacent teeth tilt, the final crown may no longer fit.
  4. Bacterial invasiongaps allow decay, putting your future crown (and wallet) at risk.

Same-Day CEREC® Crowns: Lake Elsinore’s Best Cosmetic Dentists

Traditional two-visit crown One-Visit CEREC crown
Wear a fragile temporary 2–3 weeks Permanent ceramic crown in only 2 hours
Two injections & two trips off work One numbing, one appointment
Goopy impressions Digital Primescan machine means zero mess
Risk of temp crown coming off again No provisional, no second mishap

CEREC technology lets Dr. Hauser and Dr. Phillipe scan, design, mill, colorize, and glaze a high-strength ceramic restoration that matches your smile—often before your anesthesia even wears off. You leave protected and pain-free the same day your dental crown came off.

Step-by-Step Emergency Workflow

  1. Call first—no walk-ins. Our coordinators triage your “crown came off tooth” situation, verify PPO benefits (or explain out-of-network estimates), and hold the next emergency chair.
  2. Comfort on arrival. Therapy dogs Trish, Nilla, or Stella can sit chair-side while we numb gently if they are not with an already scheduled patient.
  3. Digital diagnostics. Digital X-rays confirm the remaining tooth structure and rule out hidden cracks.
  4. Tooth clean-up & scan. Decay is removed, margins refined, then a 3-D Primescan captures the prep.
  5. Crown design & milling. While the CEREC milling machine carves your new crown from a tooth-colored porcelain Sirona block, you can relax with our calm and fun environment.
  6. Bonding & bite check. Final adjustments ensure a seamless fit; you’re eating dinner normally the same night.

Scenarios We Solve Every Week

  • “My crown came off at lunch.” Sticky taffy pulled out your temporary—same-day CEREC crown seated before you go home.
  • Travel tomorrow. A cracked molar under a temp crown – Dr. Phillipe or Dr. Hauser will design a reinforced porcelain crown you can confidently board a flight with the same day.
  • Front temp crown popped off before photos. Digital shade-mapping produces an incisor crown that blends perfectly into high-resolution images.
  • Crown came off over dental implant abutment. We fabricate a new permanent crown or retorque the screw, all in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a CEREC crown last?

With good hygiene and twice-yearly teeth cleaning, studies show 15–20 years or longer.

Does a same-day crown mean lower quality?

No. Absolutely not! CAD/CAM ceramics are as strong as lab crowns and eliminate errors from shipping or hand-layering.

Will my dental visit hurt?

Modern local anesthetic and electric handpieces keep the procedure comfortable; most patients report only mild post-op tenderness. Dr. Hauser and Dr. Phillipe are very gentle and understanding dentists with over 40 years of combined experience.

Can you reuse my old temporary crown if I can’t stay?

Yes, Dr. Phillipe or Dr. Hauser can recement a short-term fix, but drifting can begin within 24 hours. Permanent crowns are safer.

What if my temp crown fell off over the weekend?

Store it in a clean bag, avoid chewing that side, call first thing Monday for an emergency slot or leave us a voicemail and we will call you Monday.
