The Link Between Teeth Cleaning and Heart Disease

How Heart Attack Risk is Lowered with Regular Dental Cleaning

Over the last decade, more researchers have been studying the link between teeth cleaning and the risk of heart attack or stroke. Although the links are not fully understood, there are mounds of data supporting a definite mouth-body connection. Dr. Mark Phillipe, DDS, and Dr. Derek Hauser, DDS, are licensed practitioners who have spent almost 40 years of combined experience in preventive care, advanced dentistry treatments, and cosmetic dentistry services.

Regular Dental Cleanings are Important

Most practitioners advise patients to schedule an appointment every 6 months for with a preventive exam and professional cleaning with one of our Registered Dental Hygienists. Even with a good home care regimen, harmful plaque is left in the mouth, which can cause serious infection.

The mouth is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria because of its moist, warm environment. Plaque is thin and sticky, making it a great place for bacteria to hide. Plaque deposits ultimately form a very hard tartar, which can’t be removed with brushing alone.

The Lakefront Family Dentistry Experience

  • Plush, state-of-the-art facility
  • Visit the same dentist every time
  • Same-day cosmetic treatments available
  • Friendly, knowledgeable staff
  • Patient satisfaction guaranteed

During your appointment, our highly skilled dental hygienist will complete a thorough teeth cleaning, using special tools that removes hard tartar deposits from the enamel and around the gum line. If not professionally removed, the gums will eventually become inflamed and result in gingivitis or serious gum infection.

How Does Dental Cleaning Decrease the Risk of Heart Attack?

Recently, findings presented by the American Heart Association (AHA) showed compelling evidence between oral health and its connection to stroke and heart disease.

The exact link is unclear, but one theory is that bacterial overgrowth in the mouth can seep its way through the gums and into the bloodstream. Once in the blood, hard plaque forms to cause blockage in blood vessels. Left untreated, this blockage may result in a heart attack or stroke.

In the AHA study, nearly 100,000 people were studied over a 7-year period. Half of these participants had never received a professional cleaning. The study concluded there was a 24% decreased risk of heart disease among those who have had their teeth professionally cleaned at least once. Furthermore, the report also concluded that people who had dental cleanings at least once per year have an even greater chance of avoiding a future heart attack.

How Can I Improve My Oral Care at Home?

Most of us already know how important it is to maintain healthy teeth and gums. We are taught from a young age to brush every day, usually twice a day.

In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends everyone brush twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Using floss after every meal also helps keep a cleaner, healthier mouth. During your appointment, the registered dental hygienist may demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to use at home.

Another way to help improve your oral state is to get a quality electric toothbrush. The electric versions are proven to be a far more effective tooth cleaner than the manual option.

Dr. Hauser and our hygienists recommend the Sonicare brand to patients and their families. These toothbrushes are recommended by more dental professionals than any other brand. They feature patented sonic technology that has twice the whitening power and is proven to remove up to 5 times more plaque than a manual brush.

During your appointment at Lakefront Family Dentistry, our staff may discuss the features and benefits of the most recommended toothbrushes. For added patient convenience, we carry many of the popular Sonicare models in our office for you to choose from.
