If the mouth is infected, there is an excellent chance another part of the body is as well. Although researchers don’t have a clear understanding of the connection, more studies show an undeniable link between conditions of the mouth and body.

In one recent study, researchers concluded that 40% of people with serious gum disease also suffered from another chronic condition in the body. Other studies showed up to 91% of people with heart disease also have a serious mouth infection.

A great, healthy smile starts at home. Establishing a good, daily oral care regimen greatly decreases your risk for future infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47% of all adult Americans suffer from periodontitis!

One of our goals at Lakefront Family Dentistry is to educate families in Temecula, California, and all around Riverside County about the importance of establishing and maintaining good oral hygiene habits. We encourage families to schedule regular exams every 6 months with Dr. Hauser.

5 Reasons to Schedule a Regular Oral Health Checkup Every 6 Months

Not only will regular checkups help keep your mouth and gums healthy, it will also help prevent other problems, such as gum disease, heart disease, stroke, etc. Listed below are 5 reasons why everyone should schedule regular dental cleaning appointments every 6 months.

  1. 1.      Oral Cancer Screening

In the United States, someone dies from mouth cancer every hour of every day. When diagnosed early, this form of cancer has a high cure rate. During regular preventive exams, Dr. Hauser and our registered dental hygienists routinely screens for this disease.

  1. 2.      Prevents Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease is a serious problem that can be prevented and/or reversed with proper treatment. Scheduling a professional cleaning every 6 months will help remove plaque and tartar build up not easily removed with standard brushing.

  1. 3.      Helps Maintain Overall Health

The mouth-body connection is one not fully understood by researchers, yet there is a significant amount of data supporting this link. One theory is that when mouth infection occurs, it causes inflammation in the blood vessels. Essentially, this will cause blood pressure to lower, which may result in serious heart disease conditions.

  1. 4.      Prevent Tooth Loss

Oral disease is the #1 cause for tooth loss in adults. Regular visits to the dentist should include professional dental cleanings. Our skilled, registered dental hygienist uses special tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup that often cannot be removed through regular brushing.

Plaque and tartar left in the mouth is a breeding ground for infectious bacteria. Over time, this bacteria leads to a mild form of gum disease called gingivitis. Left untreated, it will progress to a more serious infection, which may ultimately result in tooth loss.

  1. 5.      Keeps Bad Breath Away

Maintaining a clean, healthy mouth does more than prevent disease and infection. Studies report 85% of people with chronic bad breath, or halitosis, also have an underlying dental problem to blame.

In addition to removing hard-to-reach plaque and tartar from the gum line, the registered dental hygienist will also do a thorough cleaning and polish to remove stains (i.e., coffee, tobacco, tea, wine, etc.). Make sure to visit Lakefront Family Dentistry for your regular bi-annual exam and teeth cleaning.

What Can I Do to Establish a Good Home Care Routine?

An effective home care regimen will help reduce the risk of plaque and cavities. When brushing, spend at least 2 minutes each time making sure to clean all enamel surfaces. You should plan to brush twice a day, and floss after every single meal. Bring an extra toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and floss to work, too.

Dr. Hauser recommends everyone use an ADA approved electric toothbrush. Lakefront Family Dentistry carries a line of Sonicare electric brushes we recommend for dental cleaning at home. Many of our patients love the DiamondClean model, which has been shown to remove up to 5 times more plaque than with manual brushing.
