If you suffer from bleeding or swollen gums, it’s time to visit the dentist. Dental health is extremely important, and although many people are nervous about visiting the dentist, optimum oral health will ensure you are free of periodontal disease. This is a chronic condition that results from bacteria found on the surface of the roots of teeth. Various studies have shown how important dental treatment is to prevent periodontal disease.

A Fox News story described a recent study in which it was found that those people who were treated for periodontal disease had fewer health problems and ended up in hospital less often than those who did not have their gum disease treated. The study, which was conducted on 338,891 patients at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, showed that treatment to stop receding gums prevents various infections, as well as bone and tooth loss. Periodontal disease can also lead to a number of other medical conditions, the study found.

Those patients who received treatment for receding gums spent less on healthcare during the five years following treatment. The procedure involves cleaning the teeth both below and above the gum line. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.
