LONG-TERM CURE FOR ADULTS WITH TETRACYCLINE STAINS

CEREC Veneers: The Most Versatile Dental Treatment

One of the dangers associated with new pharmaceuticals is that the long-term effects may not be well studied when the drugs hit consumer markets. Patients who took tetracycline as children are all too familiar with this fact of modern medicine.

Tetracycline is a type of antibiotic that helps fight infection. From the 1950s to the 1980s, it often was prescribed to children. Unfortunately, when their adult teeth grew in, they were spotted with dark, deep stains that were frustratingly impossible to clean away.

If you want teeth that are white, bright and straight, contact Dr. Derek B. Hauser, DDS, at Lakefront Family Dentistry. Whether you want same-day teeth whitening or veneers, dental implants or just a general cleaning, we’re here to help patients in Riverside County. Tetracycline Becomes Calcified in Teeth

Tetracycline not only can stain the teeth of children consuming the antibiotic, but if pregnant mothers take the drug, their children’s teeth can show the effects when their permanent teeth start to show.

Tetracycline becomes calcified within teeth that are still below the gums. This causes dark spots to appear. Even with vigorous cleaning and professional whitening, these stains usually are noticeable to some degree.

Generally, children are susceptible to these stains until they turn 8 years old. That’s why it’s so important for pregnant mothers to avoid taking this particular antibiotic.

The stains may appear brown or gray in color. They can cover an entire tooth, or they might appear as horizontal lines. They reach deep into the inner layers of the tooth, so they’re classified as “intrinsic stains.”

Tetracycline marks are harmless, but they are permanent and easily noticeable. This can cause anxiety or depression.

Your Tooth Discoloration Might Not Be from Tetracycline

Remember: These stains only affect young children. If your discoloration appears after your permanent teeth have developed, it probably wasn’t caused by this antibiotic. In older patients, it’s completely safe.

The drug still is used today, but it never is prescribed to children or pregnant women. If you are an expectant mother and develop an infection, make sure your doctor knows.

CEREC Veneers are the Most Effective Treatment for Tetracycline Stains

While teeth whitening and a responsible oral-care routine can keep teeth sleek and clean, there’s no permanent solution to stained teeth like CEREC veneers. These cover the entire surface of the tooth and can last 20 years or longer!

Dr. Hauser is one of only approximately 7.5% of the CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) dentists in the United States. This is a relatively new technology that reduces the treatment time of veneer and crown procedures. In fact, Dr. Hauser can apply veneers in just one visit!

Not only can you completely remove your tooth stains, but you can do so without missing much time from work or daily tasks. While traditional veneers are designed in an off-site lab, delaying final results for days or even weeks, CEREC allows you to enjoy a white, bright smile after a single visit.

CEREC Produces Natural-Looking Results That Match Your Smile Perfectly

This process involves state-of-the-art machinery that shapes veneers to match your unique smile. A 3-dimensional camera will capture the contours of your teeth. Dr. Hauser adjusts the 3D image to create the ideal veneer shape, and the information is sent to a milling device right in the office that crafts the veneer.

The color will match the shade of your teeth. People won’t even notice your veneers, and the results can last for decades!
