Dental Crowns
A crown is a “cap” that covers a tooth in order to restore its size, shape and strength. Crowns also improve the overall appearance of the tooth. They fully encase the visible area of a tooth that lies above or at the gum line. Using CEREC technology, the regular tooth is smoothed down, so a larger portion of the new CEREC (crown) tooth is more durable and long lasting.
Dental Crowns Address Several Problems
A dental crown may be needed to:
- Protect a weak tooth (one that has been damaged from decay) from breaking
- Restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been worn down
- Support and cover a tooth with a large filling where there is not enough of the natural tooth left
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Cover severely discolored teeth or misshaped teeth
- Cover a dental implant
- Cosmetic modification
Children can also get crowns on primary or baby teeth in order to:
- Save a tooth that has been so severely damaged by decay that it cannot support a filling
- Protect the teeth of a child who is at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has a difficult time keeping up with daily oral care
- Decrease the frequency of general anesthesia for children unable to receive it due to age, behavior or medical history, to fully cooperate with the requirements of proper dental care
In these cases, a pediatric dentist is likely to recommend a stainless steel crown.
Caring For a Dental Crown
Crowned teeth do not require any special care, but just because the underlying tooth is covered, this does not mean that it is protected from gum disease or decay. Therefore, it is important to implement good oral hygiene practices into your daily routine, which includes brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing at least once a day.
Lakefront Family Dentistry Provides Same-Day Dental Crown Services
Dr. Hauser is known for being one of the best cosmetic dentists in Riverside County, and he can complete a dental crown procedure in just one visit! By using state-of-the-art CEREC technology, patients can come in, get their teeth fitted and receive their crowns in only one or two visits just days apart. Waiting weeks for a lab off-site to make a tooth that might not fit or look right is a thing of the past with Dr. Hauser’s in-house lab using CEREC.
Before this breakthrough in dental technology, permanent restorative solutions took up to three or more office visits. During these visits, a custom mouth impression mold would be taken and then sent off to an offsite laboratory to create a permanent replacement tooth.
Patients were sent home wearing a temporary cap, tooth or teeth and would return weeks later for the permanent replacement. Unfortunately, this cap was loose enough to allow bacterial buildup beneath, which increased the risk for infection. With the CEREC system, this is not a concern, and same-day treatments mean fast service; no need to wait for results!
The Lakefront Family Dentistry facility is one of the very few family dentist offices that offer this system, which allows Dr. Hauser to create perfect fitting, flawless porcelain crowns right from the convenience of the office.
