Your Family Dentist Can Help Reduce the Bad Bacteria Linked to Colorectal Cancer

A Sun City Dentist Offers More Than Just Regular Cleanings

According to Medical News Today, two studies published last August establish a connection between a type of bacteria present in the mouth and colorectal cancer. This discovery is yet another reason why regular cleanings by your family dentist are important.

This particular bacterium is actually classified as a gut bacterium of which there are trillions of types, and they far outnumber our body’s own cells. They help us survive by monitoring our immune responses and breaking down the nutrients in the food we eat, but they can also hinder us by causing infections that can lead to cancer.

Studies have shown that if the balance between “good” and “bad” gut bacteria is off, it increases the risk of developing colorectal, colon and bowel cancers. The latter is second only to lung cancer in terms of mortality rates across the globe.

Colorectal Cancer Rates Are Increasing For People Under 50

Characterized as any lump, tumor or lesion in the colon, this form of cancer is on the rise among people under the age of 50, and its rate of occurrence has more than doubled over the last several years.

Potential Signs of Colorectal Cancer

  • Having to use the bathroom more frequently than normal
  • Loose bowel movements
  • Constipation
  • The bowels still feel full after a bowel movement
  • Blood in the stool
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Bloating in the abdomen
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Lumps in the back or stomach
  • An iron deficiency that cannot be rectified or explained

The Findings Of The Study

Like the gut and colon, our mouths are home to millions of types of bacteria. In this particular study researchers discovered Fusobacteria, which is present in the mouth, can survive in benign tumors. When the bacterium was injected in mice, it increased the production of the immune cells responsible for producing cancer.

In a second study, a molecule from Fusobacteria, known as Fusobacterium adhesion-A because it attaches to cells, stimulated genes that cause inflammation and tumor growth. The researchers compared healthy tissue cells with cancerous colorectal cells and deduced the healthy tissue had much lower levels of Fusobacterium adhesion-A. They concluded that the presence of this bacterium may signify a high risk for colorectal cancer.
