Ask Your Corona Family Dentist How Brushing Your Teeth Can Improve Your Athletic Performance

A Corona Dentist Can Help You Achieve Your Hygienic and Cosmetic Goals

A study conducted on 302 athletes from the 2012 London Olympics, which was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, shows brushing and flossing your teeth is just as important to your physical prowess as what kind of gear you wear. 18 percent of the athletes involved in the research group felt their oral health was downgrading their performance, and 8.7 percent never even scheduled an appointment with a family dentist.

An Experienced Corona Dentist Can Help Boost Your Physical Fitness

Regular dental cleanings with your family dentist are an integral component of your overall health and well-being. Preventative dentistry is essential to guard against gingivitis, which is an insidious inflammation of the gums that if left unchecked, can develop into severe periodontal disease.

This condition contributes to heart attacks, leads to strokes and causes tooth loss. In recent years, more research has proven how oral hygiene influences several of the body’s vital systems.

If you reside in Corona or the surrounding cities in Riverside County, consult Dr. Derek. B. Hauser, DDS, for your family’s oral healthcare. Dr. Hauser has 2 decades of experience as a family dentist and has worked with CEREC technology for 10 years.

Not only is he an excellent candidate to serve as your Corona dentist due to his certifications in laser dentistry and invisalign®, but Dr. Hauser also provides cosmetic dentist lectures and educates other practices across the nation.

Oral Health Affects Your Ability to Compete In Sports

The London Olympics study was supervised by Professor Ian Needleman of the University College London Eastman Dental Institute. Needleman and his assistants provided a dental checkup and then invited each participant to evaluate how large of a factor their oral health was in the success of their sport careers.

Most of the athletes hailed from the United States, Europe and Africa. Combined, they represented 25 different sports, with nearly 40 percent being involved in track and field.

Here are the findings of the study:

  • Fifty-five percent of the study group had some sort of dental decay or cavities.
  • Half of them had not attended a dental appointment within the last six months.
  • Forty-two percent said they were hampered by issues stemming from their dental health.
  • Twenty-eight percent stated that their dental health definitely had an effect on their daily well-being.
  • The athletes exhibited signs of dental health similar to many residents of underdeveloped nations.

Possibly the most revealing statistics is that 42 percent of these athletes claim that dental health influences their performance. According to Needleman and his colleagues, this correlation is established because tooth decay causes two issues:

  • Physical discomfort and irritation: Aching teeth and gums from cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease and infected wisdom teeth can inhibit an athlete’s concentration.
  • Low self-confidence: This can result from bad breath and missing or rotten teeth.

According to Needleman, two reasons why athletes tend to suffer from poor dental hygiene are high-carb diets and weaker immune systems as results of intense exercise routines.

Although the study group was comprised of Olympic athletes that compete at the highest level, Needleman asserts that every man, woman and child should consider the long list of benefits offered by good oral care.

How to Improve Both Your Dental Health and Athletic Performance

Make sure you take care of your teeth and mouth like you would any other part of your body. The first step is paying close attention to your diet. Design a diet that incorporates healthful foods without too many carbs. Then, brush twice daily and floss at least once each day, if not twice.
